The Frustration Mounts [Nov. 5th, 2006|08:54 am]

I am very close to disbanding my team. Every week when they come in I ask what they have done, and week after week I get the same response: nothing. None of them have done ANYTHING! I am not going to use the general funds and pay $70 for them to attend competition if they have nothing to present. The team decides on the tasks that need to be completed and then everyone chooses what they want to work on, either by themselves or in groups (and sometimes both). The problem is, nothing is getting done. It's always, "Oh, I forgot" or "I didn't have time". Well guess what? This isn't my team!

I tell them that my role as their coach is to help them get organized, make a schedule, and keep them safe. My role is *not* to help them make the stuff. Could I make their script, costumes, and props? Yes, and it would turn out smashingly. Am I going to? Heck no! I have offered to schedule extra meeting days, but when the day comes no one shows up or maybe only one person comes. This is ridiculous.

This week I am going to tell them that they have three weeks to show me some significant progress or they will not be going to competition.

Would someone be willing to make a user-pic for this community? I no longer have the applications on my computer or I would do it myself.

Thanks!

Well, this past meeting I finally figured out how to get my team to get things done. I had them brainstorm the different things they would need to do before they could begin making props (the thing they *really* want to do). After they listed them on the board, I had them put them in order of importance. Then I looked them straight in the eye and told them they need to do the top three things before they left that day. They stared at me aghast. I stared right back and told them it was my job to help them reach their potential and that before they left they had to do *this* *this* & *this* (firm fingerjabs at each one, of course).

Lo and behold, it worked.

They settled down, they got serious, and they accomplished the first three of their goals. Lets just see how it goes at tomorrow's meeting, lol.

Hi guys :)

My name is Blake, and this is my first year coaching at an Arizona charter school with grades 7-12. It looks like we will have 9 teams this year. Last year all 8 of our teams went to Worlds and one team went to Eurofest, so I think we have a pretty successful program and I'm proud to be a part of it.

A little about my OM expierience...

I did 2 years of OM as a student, 1996-97 (OMerdroid Div II) and 1997-98 (Morph Magic Div II) and went to Worlds both years, including the infamous Disney World World Finals... ah memories... lol...

In 1998, my school district sided with DI after the split, so I did that in high school.

Odyssey of the Mind changed my life, which is why I want to continue my participation and support of the program.

This year it looks like I'll be coaching Div II vehicle and possibly Div II technical as well.

If you have questions about OM in general, I'd be happy to answer them. I don't have any real coaching expiereince so I don't know much about tribunals and other coach-related stuff, but I know the rest of the program inside and out!

Hi! Sarah here, first-year teacher(well, I started last Dec. as a maternity leave replacement) and first year coach. I have no experience at all with OM- we didn't have it in my schools growing up. It is a very sore subject in our district. The union hates, no one wants to do it, etc etc. It's pretty much a first year right of passage.

Ok, now to the real stuff. Division I, NJ. Lighthouse region. We met today as a district and picked our problem. Anyone else doing problem 3? I love it! I am lucky enough to be co-coaching (we're a tag team!) which is great. We plan to hold auditions next week and begin practicing by the end of the month. :)

We had our third meeting as a team today and they accomplished so much (even though they did not have a lot of tangible things to show for it). Since they were very antsy at the beginning of the last meeting, I had them start off with a drama game this time. They played "Only Questions" where they could only ask each other questions and also had to respond in questions. They thought it was going to be soooo easy, but once they actually started playing they quickly changed their minds. I think I will have them start off the meetings with different drama activities so that they can switch from "school" mode to "OotM" mode.

One of the difficulties I am having as a first year coach is that I have no idea what kind of "schedule" they should be on. I know that I have told them the vast majority of their stuff probably needs to be done by early January so that they can spend the rest of the time tweaking stuff, but I am having a hard time helping them decide on deadlines because *I* don't know know about the deadlines. I am attending a Beg Coaches meeting in two weeks so hopefully I will have a better idea at that time.

If anyone has suggestions, let me know!

I wanted to start this community because as a first year coach and coordinator (how did I manage to be talked into doing both?!) I know there are times when I am a bit overwhelmed with everything. Even as a seasoned participant, I would never be successful at this without the help of others.

A little about your mod: I started participating in OotM when I was in 4th grade and competed until the end of 8th grade. During that time we went to state every year except one and even made it to the World Finals. I still have my pins from World and I love pulling them out along with my certificates and letters from "important people" such as the state senators at the time, local government, and local school board members so that I can show my daughter an important part of my life. Looking back, I wish I would have had the sense to keep competing through high school because now I realize how much fun I had in the program.

If you decide to join please introduce yourself and let others know that we are here! Also, if you can think of any other key words to add to our interests, please let me know =)
