Gettin' into the swing of things! [Oct. 2nd, 2006|11:06 pm]
Odyssey of the Mind for Coaches and Coordinators

We had our third meeting as a team today and they accomplished so much (even though they did not have a lot of tangible things to show for it). Since they were very antsy at the beginning of the last meeting, I had them start off with a drama game this time. They played "Only Questions" where they could only ask each other questions and also had to respond in questions. They thought it was going to be soooo easy, but once they actually started playing they quickly changed their minds. I think I will have them start off the meetings with different drama activities so that they can switch from "school" mode to "OotM" mode.

One of the difficulties I am having as a first year coach is that I have no idea what kind of "schedule" they should be on. I know that I have told them the vast majority of their stuff probably needs to be done by early January so that they can spend the rest of the time tweaking stuff, but I am having a hard time helping them decide on deadlines because *I* don't know know about the deadlines. I am attending a Beg Coaches meeting in two weeks so hopefully I will have a better idea at that time.

If anyone has suggestions, let me know!

Wow! We don't even have our teams yet. Our district is meeting this Wednesday to discuss and choose our problems. Most likely, we will hold "auditions" towards the middle of the month and then have a team by the end of the month. November is practically a lost month with all the time off. Sheesh!

(edited for typos)

Deadlines and stuff will differ depending on the division your kids are in. If you give them class time to work, you can hold them to higher standards about getting it done, but we worked after school and during class when our teachers would let us out. We also had almost an entire classroom to work and store our things in, it's tougher if your kids are working at home and you can't monitor their progress.

Div IIs, in my expierience are a lot better about listening to you when you say "We need the script done by Feb 1." As a Div IIIer, we did almost all of our work in the last month, and to be honest, 75% of it in the last 2 weeks. One year, as a Div IIIer, we even did pretty much everything in 6 days.

Haha, I guess now you've heard the worst of it. I hope your kids aren't procrastinators like we were :)

Let me know if you have an specific questions :)

My teams is composed of fourth and fifth graders from different classes, and meetings are only once a week after school until Dec, then 2-3 times a week beginning in January. Some of the work will be done at home of course, but some will also be done at school.

I think I have figured out the "getting stuff done" thing though (as you'll see if you read my next post!)
